St. Ignatius Parish is building Divine Mercy Cemetery, located at 3768 Spring Hill Avenue in Mobile, on property next to the parish. Burying the dead is a corporal work of mercy, and the cemetery will be a place of prayer and remembrance where the signs of our faith in the resurrection are displayed with reverence.
Beginning November 15, 2026, burial spaces will be available for purchase before construction begins.

Please review the Parish Cemetery and Columbarium Rules and Regulations (PDF, adopted October 1, 2026), which cover interment rights, burials, memorials and markers, and cemetery care.
Pre-construction purchasers have first choice of locations, including side-by-side spaces for families who would like an upright monument. Planning ahead brings peace of mind and spares your loved ones difficult decisions later, and your early commitment helps make Divine Mercy Cemetery a reality for our community.

Questions? Contact the parish office:
What am I purchasing?
You are purchasing interment rights: the right to be buried, or to designate who will be buried, in a specific burial space at Divine Mercy Cemetery. The land itself remains the property of St. Ignatius Parish. Once your space is paid in full and the cemetery is completed, the parish issues you a Certificate of Interment Rights for the space(s) you purchased.
What does the price include?
The purchase price covers the burial space only. Opening and closing of the grave, the burial vault, and the memorial marker are separate costs at the time of need.
Can I purchase spaces for my whole family?
Yes. You may purchase as many spaces as your family needs. As the owner, you decide who will be buried in each space, and you may change those designations at any time. Families who purchase two or more side-by-side spaces may also place one upright monument at the head of their lot.
When will the cemetery open?
Construction will begin once the City of Mobile and the Mobile County Health Department give final approval. Your payment is protected: if construction has not begun by September 23, 2027, you may request a full refund. If a death occurs before the cemetery is completed, you or your family may request a full refund of your payment.
How many people may be buried in one space?
Each space holds one casketed burial. With the parish's consent, a space may also hold one casketed burial plus either an infant or one person's cremated remains, if there is room. A space used only for cremated remains may hold the remains of up to three people.
Can cremated remains be buried at Divine Mercy Cemetery?
Yes. The Church permits cremation and asks that cremated remains be laid to rest in a sacred place. Cremated remains are buried in a ground space in an approved vault. The cemetery has also been designed to accommodate a columbarium in the future. Scattering is not permitted.
Do I have to be Catholic?
No. Divine Mercy Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery, rooted in our faith in the resurrection, but it is not limited to Catholics. Anyone may purchase a burial space, and families of all faiths are welcome, including non-Catholic spouses and loved ones who wish to rest beside one another. As at any Catholic cemetery, memorials and inscriptions must be consistent with the teachings of the Church.
Is financing available?
No. Burial spaces are paid in full when you sign your Pre-Construction Agreement. You may pay by check (payable to Divine Mercy Cemetery), cash, or credit or debit card. Debit card payments are charged the credit card rate.
What is the policy on monuments?
Every grave must be marked with a granite, marble, or bronze memorial. Individual spaces may have either a flush marker, set level with the lawn, or a slant marker, with an angled face. Families who own two or more side-by-side spaces may place one upright monument at the head of their lot. All memorials and inscriptions are approved in advance by the Cemetery Manager.
How will the cemetery be maintained?
St. Ignatius Parish cares for the grounds, including mowing, watering, debris removal, fertilizing, and pruning. A portion of every burial space sale is set aside in a Divine Mercy Cemetery fund dedicated to the cemetery's long-term maintenance.
Can I sell my space later?
Yes. If you no longer need your burial space, you may sell or transfer it to another person with the parish's written approval. The parish will provide the transfer forms, and a transfer fee may apply.
When may I visit?
Once open, the cemetery will welcome visitors from sunrise to sunset, seven days a week.
A copy of the Cemetery Rules and Regulations is available from the parish office on request. For any other questions, call 251-342-9221 or email [email protected].
